HOW TO ORDER AND PRICES

The descriptive catalogue is now back in print. Please click on 'Get Printed Catalogue' on the left hand menu. Most of the information in the catalogue is available on the website, but the printed catalogue is quicker to navigate and saves paper and ink compared to printing off the website.

Our fruit trees cannot be ordered online. The availability changes constantly and, for a small business, the distraction and workload of updating availability in real time, on a website, is too great. It just doesn't work in practice. We are happy to check on availability for customers who telephone or email in an order enquiry.

We grow a very large range of varieties on a choice of rootstocks. The number of permutations is considerable and therefore the number of trees of any one variety, on a particular rootstock, is limited. If you want a large number of any one, it is likely they would have to be grafted specially, with advance notice.Trees are usually grafted early in the year. They are ready to go in the autumn, as one season maidens. The stock availability is highest then, although some trees have already been pre-ordered. Any gaps that then appear in the range cannot be replaced before the following autumn. Therefore, it is best to order in summer and autumn for instant availability of something in particular, though we always have many good alternatives throughout the year.

Our trees are container grown, initially in 4 litre deep pots, in peat free compost. After two seasons they are often transplanted to 7 litre pots. The prices are set according to the pot size. See below for prices. At the nursery, the visitor will have the choice of between 1 and 4 season old trees, though the range of older trees will be more limited as most leave us earlier in their lives. Courier delivery is limited to 4 litre pots - the younger trees.

We do not grow bare rooted trees. There are pros and cons for both container grown and bare rooted trees. Container grown trees can be bought and planted at any time of year and can even be kept in their containers for some time, with care, if planting is delayed or customers are moving house. Bare rooted trees are sometimes larger but can suffer a check or even die back, because they lose fibrous roots when dug up.
Our trees are not grown to a particular form, eg espalier, and are ready for training rather than ready trained. We do not grow 'family' trees.

HOW TO ORDER
Please order over the telephone (01844 237415) or by email. For those collecting, email orders are fine, but for mail order delivery we need some specific details, and presenting card details by email is not secure. By all means email, but a further telephone call will be necessary. Please be sure to include which rootstock you prefer - details are on the relevant web pages - and include alternative varieties if you are happy to be flexible, when some choices are out of stock. Generally it is best to let us know what you want so that we can check stock and telephone or email back.

PRICES from July 2021
For several years we have not increased prices, while costs have risen significantly. Regrettably we must now make a modest increase.
Please note, our container grown trees are in 4 litre or 7 litre pots, but only the 4 litre ones can be sent by mail order. The number available in 7 litre pots is limited. Not all new trees grow equally and where the size is a bit less than normal, we usually reduce the price accordingly.

Apples, Pears, Quinces and Medlars
£25 in 4 litre pots, £30 in 7 litre pots

Plums, Cherries and Peaches/Nectarines
£28 in 4 litre pots, £35 in 7 litre pots

Vines, figs, currants, gooseberries, hops and other soft fruit bushes - all in 4 litre pots
Vines -£15, Figs - £20, Currants - £12, Raspberries - £12, Gooseberries - £15, Hops - £12,
Jostaberries and Worcesterberries - £12, Rhubarb - £12

Where we graft new trees from wood supplied by customers from their old trees, or when grafting to order, the price is the same for a one year tree as above. Normally, for such trees, ordered in advance, payment is not required until closer to the time of supply, though for some larger orders a deposit may be required.

Collecting or delivered?
We always prefer to see and assist customers at the nursery, as well as avoid the time consuming and costly business of packing parcels, but we realise many customers need orders delivered. It is worth pointing out that our trees are flexible and several can be fitted in the rear footwells of most cars. If the trip is impossible we can send trees by next day courier, usually quickly, if in stock. 'Next day' does not mean the day after ordering and in the current climate 'next day' is sometimes not achieved!

Mail Order Packing and Delivery Charges

We have, regretfully, had to increase our delivery charges.
Sending out pot grown trees, in their pots, with the weight and volume, is more expensive than others might quote for sending smaller bare root trees. The advantages of pot grown trees unfortunately carry this extra burden. The couriers who will accept large parcels are less than the fingers on one hand. The few that do charge excessively for them. Our costs of packing time and processing, materials and high courier charges are significant, and all these costs have recently risen substantially. We regret that we have to charge so much for delivery. Even with the increased charges we will still have to subsidize mail order deliveries. The new charges barely cover the costs of the couriers. The ever more expensive packing materials and cost of time in packing and processing deliveries are still not included in the new charges. They might have to rise further. We always prefer customers to visit the nursery and collect trees. Please, do if you can. If you know of a national carrier/courier that will take large parcels, exclusing FedEx and XDP, please let us know!

The mainland UK delivery charge is :-
1 tree or soft fruit £22.00
2 trees or soft fruit £25.00
3-4 trees or soft fruit £35.00
For each tree or soft fruit, beyond four, add £4.50

For some northern areas of Scotland courier tariffs are substantially higher and we would have to charge extra. Please consult the website for details of specific postcodes affected and ask us for a quote. Please click the link below for details. It might be preferable to arrange delivery to a friend or relative in a cheaper area.

Please note that we do not send trees outside Britain.

We accept the well known debit and credit cards, but there are many other cards in use that charge merchants much higher commissions, so please do not present those. Cheques should be made payable to Mr D and Mrs C Tolman.
